Long Distances with Children?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Walking long distances with children could be fun! Friends of mine with children walked part of the Caminho to Santiago and the Fishermens trail. One of them told me that he like the Fishermens trail more. I guess that is the fun thing about a trail. The path is rough, going up and down and the scenery is never boring walking a trail. My own child has good shoes, and she can really walk around 20 km. We did some trails of around 12-18 km.. However, she doesn’t want to go with me on a caminho to Santiago, that is too lonely or boring for her.
Well, I suggested to do the Fishermens trail,<\/a> something more exciting. There is the ocean where we will swim and play every day. This is really a big plus when you do the Fishermens trail. If you see a cafe of restaurant, they have variety of food, the Algarve has international flavours! Read more about this trail<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trilho de Pescadores, No Surprises<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This trail is such a nice one. You’ll not believe what kind of views with lime rocks you’ll see coming out of the water, while walking. When I was travelling in overcrowded beaches in Thailand with new year, I longed to Portugal where you do have private beaches and splendid views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesss: Cinta Said Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The good thing is that Cinta, my child finally said yes! We will walk from Lagos to Arrifana Beach, just as I did with Willeke in June 2025, no surprises. But It is a tough trail so with eevery caminho there are surprises of course. Actually there may be one surprise: we could go with two children. Cinta asked her best friend from school to join us. This is also a real nice thing when you like to walk with children, if you have more, they will have fun together.
As soon the school has Eastern holidays, we will go to the Algarve!

Booked Places to Stay<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Although I walked a part of this trail last year, I did some research again and I booked all in advance. We will keep walking until we reach the houses, there is no way back. With kids you like to have some certainty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first stage from Lagos to Salema, I split up in two. Then it is a quiet day of 10 km to Praia de Luz followed by another one of 12 km to Salema. This will be 2-days beach stay including a little walk in the morning! I remember it was really a short walk, but I, the km-freak need to compromise too! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

V Check: Blister Plasters<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I am prepared. Tape for my ankle, blister plasters and fatty foot cream. If we have blisters we could walk further without problems, and we pamper our feet when we get out of the salty sea! Or out of the swimming pool. A lot of ‘Alojamento Locais’ the albergues and guesthouses have a swimming pool. You can imagine being here in summer. The pool is needed in the Portugese summer heat. And also important for kids, it is great to jump into the pool, even after a beach day.

Packing List<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I always travel light, and with the caminho I am strict. Don’t take more than you need. It will give you more energy during the walk. And the walks are exhausting.
The sun wil be there in the Eastern holiday, so no need for extra dry clothes, we will wash our stuff every day, it will dry. Last year I didn’t even bring a towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • One pair of socks and underwear<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • One set of walking clothes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • An evening outfit for after the walk<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Swimming gear and small towel<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Flip flops or sandals<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Deodorant, toothbrush etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Book or e-book and card games
